SAFWAT designs and builds wastewater treatment plants for Tunisian industry: biological treatment, filtration and effluent recycling. The goal is twofold — reach discharge compliance, and recover what can be recovered rather than paying for it twice.
An industrial effluent is treated for two reasons that call for different technical choices. The first is regulatory: the discharge must respect the limits imposed, which sets a minimum quality target. The second is economic: past a certain volume, treated water becomes a resource again, and recycling part of the effluent reduces both the water bill and the volume discharged.
Sizing therefore depends on the real pollutant load, how much it varies across production, and the decision whether or not to recycle. A concentrated but steady effluent and a dilute but highly variable one are not treated the same way, even at equal volume.
Activated sludge. The reference biological treatment: a suspended biomass degrades the organic load in an aerated basin before separation. Robust and well understood, it suits effluents dominated by organic load.
MBR and MBBR. MBR (membrane bioreactor) combines biological treatment with membrane separation, removing the clarifier and producing a markedly higher-quality effluent — often the most direct route to recycling. MBBR relies on biomass fixed to mobile carriers and copes better with load variation.
Filtration and polishing. A downstream filtration stage refines the quality of the treated effluent, particularly where it is intended for reuse rather than discharge.
Our modular wastewater treatment plant covers 50 to 400 m³/day using activated sludge with filtration, in a containerised configuration — quick to install and relocatable, with no heavy civil works.
Recycling an effluent means treating it beyond the regulatory threshold, up to the quality the intended use demands. Not all water is equal in this respect: floor-washing water and product-contact rinse water do not require the same treatment level, and it is rarely sensible to treat the entire flow to the most demanding standard.
The approach is therefore to separate streams where possible, identify those whose recycling pays for itself, and size the treatment around those. We delivered an industrial effluent recycling installation in Sfax on exactly this principle.
The methodology matches process water: study and on-site audit, design and sizing, construction and installation, then commissioning with training for your teams.
The difference lies in the follow-up. A biological plant is a living process: its performance depends on the balance of the biomass, which reacts to variation in load, temperature and composition. The maintenance plan and supervision matter even more here than on a purely physico-chemical installation.
